Crossways Environmental Services was successful in being awarded the
contract for conducting asbestos surveys for all the Marks and Spencer
stores, including the Head Office buildings, to determine the presence and
condition of asbestos containing materials (ACMs).
This contract is
currently on-going.
As there are about 300 properties involved, a detailed programme was
carefully produced and agreed. Crossways steadily work through this programme
in co-operation with Gleeds, the clients appointed surveyor.
We produce reports for all stores, office buildings and distribution depots
and these are stored (in high security conditions) at our offices on behalf
of Marks and Spencer Plc. Held both electronically and in paper form,
information from these reports is readily available to authorised personnel,
contractors and sub-contractors. We manage and control this register. All
activities regarding asbestos in each building are recorded and the reports
are updated immediately so that the current situation is available to all
authorised users.
These reports are stored in the ENVACS database system, which is
designed to comply with The Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2002.
Authorised contractors involved with asbestos remedial or removal works,
maintenance or refurbishment works have access to the up-to-date information
at all times. All they have to do is contact Crossways Environmental Services
and a report can be downloaded, produced on disk or in print. The Client's
project managers and design teams also have the same access.
Crossways have carried out Type 2 asbestos surveys at over 300 Marks & Spencer stores
Crossways revisit those Marks & Spencer Stores that contain asbestos on an annual basis; the condition of asbestos containing materials is assessed and the asbestos survey report updated.
Selective intrusive surveys are undertaken at those Marks & Spencer stores undergoing a major refurbishment.
Crossways produced
& now maintain an asbestos management plan which is held centrally
detailing the provisions in place to manage asbestos within Marks &
Spencer stores. This document is reviewed on an annual basis.
Crossways produced & now maintain this document which details the procedures & protocols which must be followed in relation to asbestos works. The document has been reviewed following consultation with the Health & Safety Executive. Details of approved asbestos contractors & emergency procedures are contained within the document.
Emergency procedures are in place to cover trading stores (during & outside trading hours), and stores during major refurbishment works. All procedures are detailed within the Guide to Health & Safety – Asbestos Safety
ALL asbestos removal works MUST be carried out by an approved asbestos removal contractor. Details of approved contractors are held within the Guide to Health & Safety – Asbestos Safety. Currently there are five contractors approved for work within England, Scotland and Wales and two contractors approved for Ireland.
The Marks
& Spencer approved asbestos removal contractors are independently
monitored and audited by Crossways.
All Marks & Spencer asbestos removal works are notified to Crossways via a dedicated website. This website generates ASB5 notifications where appropriate which are then issued to the HSE. Close-off reports enable Crossways to update the asbestos register/asbestos survey report.
Crossways organise Asbestos awareness seminars which are attended by Marks & Spencer key personnel, approved contractors & sub-contractors.
An electronic system for signing in which incorporates the latest electronic version of the asbestos survey report is currently being tested within stores.
