The role of the Asbestos Analyst

Asbestos: - The analyst's guide for sampling analysis and clearance procedures It is a legal requirement that all asbestos analysts are UKAS accredited.

The role of the asbestos analyst during asbestos removal operations is:-

- to carry out air monitoring both inside and outside the enclosure where removal works are being carried out,
- to carry out personal air monitoring on removal operatives within the enclosure,
- to carry out visual inspections and clearance air tests on completion of the removal projects and
- to issue certification to confirm that, following asbestos removal work, the area is fit for normal re-occupation.

Crossways strongly recommends that analytical companies be appointed to the asbestos removal project independently and not by the designated removal contractor.

Crossways will give guidance and recommendations for the appointment of appropriate independent UKAS accredited analytical companies.

HSG248, published by the Health and Safety Executive, defines how analysts must work.
